The Brief
The Virtual Graduation was a concept created by Crowd Culture in August 2020 in response to the news that many schools throughout Australia were being faced with the prospect of cancelling proms, awards evenings and graduations due to global pandemic of Covid-19.
Three schools within Victoria choose the Virtual Graduation format for their end of year events due to lockdown restrictions that existed within the state during their end of year celebrations. Each event was brought to life by our production team and delivered to vast school communities across the state.

De La Salle College
De La Salle College were the first school to take up the Virtual Graduation offering due to the fact their event was due to take place in late October and there was little indication lockdown restriction in Victoria would ease by this date.
De La Salle’s event comprised of a number of different elements, off of which were filmed live (at the school under strict health and security protocols) in the final week of school for the Year 12s.
This included:
- Speeches from senior staff, students, religious scholars and year level teachers
- Musical performances from the school band
- Presentation of school medallions to Year 12 Students
- Presentation of peer awards by students
Firbank Grammar
Firbank Grammar followed a similar format to that of De La Salle College, but which their Graduation Ceremony was entirely pre-produced on site prior to a school wide community screening.
Whereas De La Salle College’s presentation was for its senior year level, Firbank Grammar’s was presented to the entire school community (some 750+ students and families) and featured the following:
- Integrated photo montage of awards winners from all school year levels
- Musical and dance pieces from senior students
- Custom designed backdrop featuring Firbank Grammar logos (designed and produced by Crowd Culture)
Key Features
The key feature of the Virtual Graduation concept was ensuring that school communities could come together as one unit to celebrate the achievements of their student body (of any year level) in what was a truly remarkable year for education and learning, all from the comfort of their individual homes. At the heart of this offering was community; in a time when students had been physically separated from their peers and broader school communities, the end of year celebrations had to be one that everyone could engage in where possible.
When designing our Virtual Graduation offering, emphasis was placed on the end to produce an event that was as close as possible to the live version as possible and we worked closely with schools to ensure that all elements were captured as they would have been presented had the event been held live.
This included staging speeches and award ceremonies in familiar settings within the school grounds such as auditoriums and theatres, all of which were styled, but the schools, in the same manner they would for a live ceremony.
On the evenings of these events, students had the opportunity in interact with senior school staff and teachers through interactive ‘rooms’ and with other students, thus ensuring the concept of community was meant continually throughout the event.
