The Brief
The Australian Government Department of Defence (ADF) engaged Crowd Culture to design and construct their new MakerSpaces, portable learning structures where up to 8 personnel could work together in a creative environment.
Each structure was required to be equipped with innovative technology such as desktop 3D printers, CNC machines and laser cutters, therefore not only did space need to be allocated to these items in the design, but also operations requirements for these devices such as windows and exhausts.

The Design
The key design concept behind the MakerSpace was innovation and as an end result, the design of the final space was an innovation in itself. Although a traditional container design at heart, the MakerSpace design featured a mechanical awning which allowed for rapid expansion (from single to double container) with the click of a single button.
This concertina effect was a key feature and also allowed for easy installation and setup; the structure could be set up by as little as two people.
Key Features
- Push button expansion - create double the footprint within 10 minutes to transform from standard container to office space in one fluid motion
- Fully sealed with XFLAM foam panels to create a fully temperature controlled space with split system heating and cooling and enhanced fire resistance
- High tech hardware throughout including, RFID electronic locks, security cameras, hardwired ethernet, UPS Power backup system and 4k TV screens
- NPS power connection to ensure space can be used in any NATO country/area
- Custom crafted tables and benchtops using local hardwood timbers
- Easily transportable either via road, air or sea
Overall, the design process took 8 months to complete, from briefing through to concept renders and final construction of the containers by specialist manufacturers in Warrigal, Victoria.
Final delivery included installation of two containers at locations in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
DESIGN VARIATIONS
The best bits
The key feature of the MakerSpace was the innovating concertina style expansion via a single, push button mechanism.
This feature, pioneered for the first time on the MakerSpace, allowed the awning to expand outwards in one fluid motion and effectively doubled the footprint of the space within 10 minutes.
The MakerSpace, as a whole, is a versatile space that can be used for a multitude of purposes, from a space of innovation and creations, through to mobile command post or temporary office space. The fitout options, internally, are endless and can be easily customisable to the clients needs in the future.
